Boost Your Sales with Better Messaging: 3 Mistakes You’re Making (And How to Fix Them)
Your content is getting views. Your emails are getting opened. You’re showing up consistently, just like all the marketing experts (including myself) tell you to… but your audience still isn’t converting.
If you’ve been wondering why your content isn’t leading to more sales, the problem likely isn’t the platform, the algorithm, or even the offer itself. It’s your messaging.
Messaging is the foundation of everything in your brand. It’s how you communicate what you do, who you serve, and why your audience should choose you over someone else. However, many entrepreneurs make mistakes that cause their messaging to fall flat, leading to low engagement, slow audience growth, and missed sales opportunities.
In this post, I’m breaking down the three biggest messaging mistakes that might be costing you customers, and how to fix them:
Vague messaging that doesn’t clearly communicate what you do or who you serve
Lack of storytelling, making it harder to connect with your audience on an emotional level
Inconsistent messaging, which confuses potential customers and weakens your brand recognition
If your content isn’t converting, one of these three issues is likely the reason.
**I’ve included the main points below, but I encourage you to dive into the full episode via audio or video!

Why Messaging Matters More Than You Think
Your messaging is the bridge between your brand and your audience. It’s how people perceive and connect with what you do, and when done right, it:
Attracts the right people (so you're not shouting into the void)
Creates instant clarity (so people immediately know what you offer)
Builds emotional connection (so they trust you over someone else)
Increases conversions (so your content actually leads to sales)
And yet, most entrepreneurs don’t realize they have a messaging problem—they just assume their audience isn’t interested. The truth is, your audience may be interested, but they don’t fully understand why they need what you offer yet.
3 Major Messaging Mistakes (And What to Do Instead)
1. Your Messaging is Too Vague
If you’re saying things like:
"I help people grow their business."
"I empower women to live their best lives."
…you’re being too broad. And when your messaging is vague, it doesn’t hook the right people. Your audience isn’t sure if what you do is for them specifically, so they move on.
The Fix: Get Specific
Instead of trying to talk to everyone, focus on exactly who you help, what problem you solve, and how you solve it.
Try this simple formula:
"I help [WHO] do [WHAT] without [BIG OBJECTION]."
Before: "I help people with fitness."
After: "I help busy moms lose weight without cutting carbs or spending hours at the gym."
That small tweak makes a big difference when speaking to your audience.
2. You’re Not Using Storytelling
Facts alone don’t convert, but luckily stories do.
If your content is just listing features and benefits, your audience might understand what you offer, but they won’t feel emotionally connected to it. And emotion is what drives action.
The Fix: Use Micro-Stories
A great way to integrate storytelling is by using the Pain → Shift → Solution framework:
Pain: What struggle does your audience relate to?
Shift: What made you (or your clients) realize something needed to change?
Solution: What was the outcome after making the change?
Example:
Boring version: "I help small business owners with their branding."
Story-driven version: "When I started my business, I was posting daily but getting zero engagement. I felt invisible. It wasn’t until I nailed my brand messaging that I started converting at 10%, without changing anything else. Now, I help small business owners do the same so they can stand out in a crowded market."
A story hooks your audience and makes your message more memorable.
3. Your Messaging is Inconsistent
Ever feel like you’re constantly tweaking your messaging because you’re not seeing immediate results? That’s a problem.
When you change your messaging too often, your audience doesn’t have time to absorb what you do. It takes multiple touchpoints before someone takes action, and if you keep switching things up, people won’t trust what you’re saying.
The Fix: Stick With It for 90 Days
Instead of constantly reworking your message, commit to staying consistent for at least 90 days.
Here’s how to do it:
Choose one core message (Example: “Brand storytelling is the key to standing out online”).
Share that message across different platforms in different ways.
Test and refine based on real feedback, not gut feelings.
Your Messaging Action Plan: What to Do Next
Audit your content: Look for vague messaging and refine it using the specificity formula.
Use storytelling: Swap facts for micro-stories to build connection and drive action.
Stay consistent: Stick to one message for 90 days and test what resonates.
